Guiding principles and values

background

As we reach the milestone of the 100-year and 20-year history of our camps, it is time to reflect on the principles and values, whether explicit or not, that impact the sustainability and health of our programs. We need to be clear about the guiding principles and values that will drive our activities, community, and governance as we move into the next century of our existence.

Principles, values and norms

Culture is a shared pattern of beliefs, values, principles, assumptions and behaviors that distinguishes one group from another. Or more simply put, it is the "way we do things around here." The Law of the Woods, created by Ernest Thompson Seton in the early part of the last century, encapsulates many of our principles and values, but not all. Still, it remains essential to the way we teach these values in our programs.

Personal Behaviors

  • Kindness—By treating everyone with kindness, we inspire motivation, a sense of value, inclusion, and belonging.

  • Respect—We show genuine concern and consideration for the needs and feelings of others.

  • Integrity—Being honest and consistently upholding strong moral values and principles is at the core of our programs.

  • Trust—By caring for others’ well-being we build trust through honesty, openness, and addressing concerns.

Personal growth

  • Skills & Knowledge—Through enhancing skills and knowledge we foster confidence, allowing individuals to contribute fully regardless of their background, which is vital for character development.

  • Emotional Competence—We encourage developing the ability to recognize and constructively respond to emotions in oneself and others.

  • Courage—Building self-confidence, perseverance, and resilience through our wilderness trips and in-camp programs is a key aspect of our camping experience.

community

  • Friendship—Cultivating a sense of belonging and creating meaningful friendships are the cornerstones of our lasting community.

  • Fun—Balancing hard work and play with others of various ages provides invaluable lessons and lifelong memories.

  • Teamwork—Through participating in a diverse team, respecting differences, and contributing to collective achievements we offer unique learning opportunities.

program

  • Environmental Stewardship—We promote fostering a deep respect for nature through immersive wilderness experiences and environmental care, which is critical for preserving life and our planet.

  • Traditions & Customs—Honoring our long-standing traditions while evolving our activities for the future is a core part of our programs.

  • Law of the Woods—This code of conduct encompasses many of our values and is integral to creating our shared identity and connecting us with our heritage.
